Skulls by Simon Winchester for iPad
Skulls by Simon Winchester The title features beautiful 360 degree high-resolution rotations of over 300 animal skulls collected by Alan Dudley and photographed by Nick Mann. The Elements: A Visual Exploration is the most beautiful, the most interactive, the most magical ebook ever created, and it shipped simultaneously with the release of the Apple iPad. The Elements for iPad preserves the lush look and beautifully composed pages of the best-selling hardcover edition, but adds an astonishing new dimension to the material.
Every one of the more than 500 objects shown in the book goes from being a simple photograph to a fully interactive, rotatable 3D object. This is Harry Potter's edition of the book, filled with magical objects that are delightfully responsive to the reader's touch, spinning freely and fluidly in response to the slightest gesture.
The ebook includes integrated access to the Wolfram|Alpha computational knowledge engine, which provides thousands of detailed physical properties and even up-to-the-minute market prices. Wolfram|Alpha gives limitless access to deep and timely information in an entirely new way, unmatched by traditional printed or electronic books.
But The Elements: A Visual Exploration is more than just a technology showcase. Written by award-winning science writer Theodore Gray, and developed from his best-selling hardcover published by Black Dog & Leventhal, it is also simply a good book, beautiful photographed and filled with compelling stories and fascinating insights into the building blocks of our universe.

Totally reconceived for the iPhone 4 and recoded to take advantage of the new device's spectacular features, including retina display and gyroscope, The Elements brings the periodic table to life — all in the in palm of your hand.
Just like The Elements for the iPad, you start off at a periodic table composed of photographs of real chemical elements that you can explore with your finger. As you move around, the currently active element is shown in the selection area at the top of the page. Tap any element to go to that element's own page.
There you will find an engagingly written account of the element and a wealth of related samples and objects. Each element has multiple objects with controls at the top of the page to browse them.
Unique to the iPhone 4 is that all of these objects rotate on the screen when you physically turn the phone around. The iPhone 4's gyroscope makes the objects appear to remain stationary even as the phone is rotated, giving you a unique and fun way to explore all sides of an object―especially if you're sitting on a swivel chair! Or use your finger to turn any object as quickly or as slowly as you like. Each object responds effortlessly to your touch, and objects can be "thrown" to set them spinning. This is possible because every sample was painstakingly photographed from all sides on a precision turntable.
And just like the iPad version, The Elements for iPhone gives you access to a huge depth of technical information about each element through the Wolfram|Alpha computational knowledge engine embedded in this e-book. Touch the Wolfram|Alpha logo and you will be taken to a continuously updated Wolfram|Alpha report on the current element. For example, tap the Wolfram|Alpha entry for gold and find the current market price.
